Reinvent The Wheel: A Celebratory End-of-Summer Yoga Practice

Friday, August 23, 2019 | 6:00 - 8:00 PM

Celebrate the summer season through a purposeful and fun yoga practice designed to educate you on the mechanics of expressive heart-opening postures while honouring the peak of this beautiful 2019 summer season!

Alexandria Waycott and I are excited to share this inspiring co-creation with you on the evening of Friday, August 23, 2019 at our favourite backyard venue in the heart of Garrison Crossing. The class will be co-taught by both Alexandria and myself, who have together, shared many different teaching spaces and experiences over the past decade. The evolution of their work, individually, as dedicated students and teachers of yoga, like the changing of seasons, has brought them together again with an opportunity to combine their knowledge and teaching experience in a collaborative and thoughtful way.

This class is designed to educate participants on the biomechanics of expressive backbends–namely, Urdhva Dhanuasana, aka “Wheel Pose.” The opportunity to refine participants’ experience of the pose(s) will include offerings of stages and variations, visual demonstration, and supportive partner work. In addition to the alignment focus of this practice, the celebratory End-Of-Summer aspect of the season will inform the light-hearted, expressive, and playful approach to the entire class offering. While we welcome participants with mixed levels of experience in yoga practice, we ask that ALL people in attendance are familiar with foundational yoga postures and free of significant injury. Expect to work consciously and skillfully as well as collaboratively and playfully.

We are so excited to share this experience with you! Click on the link below to reserve your spot.

The Roots of Yoga Practice & Theory

  • Module 1: History & PHilosophy Overview

Summer 2019

This workshop is meant to support you in understanding what yoga is and where it comes from. While there will be no posture practice to go along with this particular lesson, it will be rich in educational material. Anyone who is interested in learning more about yoga is welcome to attend and anyone who is teaching and/or attending yoga classes in this day and age is encouraged to attend. The learning outcomes of this course include, but are not limited to, gaining a basic understanding of what yoga is as a whole and its relevance to the modern day experience of living.

Current yoga teachers are able to obtain continuing education credits (upon request and for a small additional fee). Consider this course to be a little refresher on what is offered in a 200hr yoga teacher training.

In addition to current teachers, this is a great taste tester for prospective yoga teacher. If you have considered investing in a yoga teacher training in the future then this course (and upcoming courses with me) will be deeply beneficial and supportive of your future learning.

Topics Covered:

  • The 8 basic paths/forms of yoga.

  • The timeline of key dates, eras, and important texts.

  • A brief history of the British invasion and its impact on the study and practice of yoga.

  • Patañjali and the Yoga Sūtras.

  • The 8 Limbs of Yoga.

  • Sri Krishnamacharya; his role and the evolution of asana (posture) practice.

  • Yoga is not a religion; it is a carefully curated science.

YOGA IN THE GARDEN: A midsummer’s eve celebration

JUNE 14, 2019 | 7:00 - 9:00 PM

Midsummer’s Eve marks the turning of the seasons from spring to summer; better known as Summer Solstice when daylight carries over into the hours of the night, this particular eve is an auspicious time of celebration and remembrance. While this year’s annual solstice yoga practice may be a bit early, it will still be a beautiful celebration of light and a coming together of community and friends; And since the evenings are bright and the air is warm we will take our practice outside and into a beautiful garden that is canopied by a grove of tall, West Coast cedar trees and backing onto a lush woodland oasis.

You can expect to be moved through an array of surya namaskars (sun salutations) as well as a sequence of postures designed to create more space in the body, fluidity in the joints, and lightness in the heart. In addition to asanas (postures), the practice will be supported by pranayama (breath technique) and meditation. This class is open to ALL levels of practice/movement ability and geared toward participants who are eager to listen and learn, as well as explore their potential in practice. As always there will be offerings of variations on shapes from the most modified to the most intermediate/advanced (and everything in-between).
